Disruption expected as bus workers strike again
- Published
Bus passengers have been warned of disruption over the coming days as a result of industrial action over pay and conditions.
RMT union members in Somerset and Cornwall will be striking on 9 and 12 August, as well withholding overtime on the days in between.
First Bus South West said the disruption would only affect Buses of Somerset, Cornwall by Kernow, and Adventures by Bus services.
A spokesperson for the company said its latest "full and final substantial offer" was an "above inflation offer for all pay grades, which follows a significant pay increase of 17.6% in December 2022".
First said its drivers were paid "well above the national minimum wage" and that it was "continually improving working conditions".
'Unacceptable behaviour'
The RMT's general secretary Mick Lynch said: “First South West’s latest proposals, presented without any negotiations, show a blatant disregard for collective bargaining."
The counterproposals from the union include pay increases and safeguarding bus workers' terms and conditions.
Mr Lynch said the union was "open to negotiations", adding: "Our counterproposals are reasonable and fair, designed to provide value to the company and our members alike.”
First Bus has advised passengers to check before travelling.
