Labour's emergency tax cut call to boost economy

Labour has re-ignited the argument over the best way to "jump start" the economy, by calling for a temporary emergency decrease in VAT.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls accused George Osborne of taking "a political gamble with the nation's economy" by refusing to consider different courses of action to help get the economy back on track.

His words came as figures were published showing that high street sales in May fell by more than was expected.
