Private rents 'hit record high'

The cost of owning your own home has risen by more than three times the rate of an average salary over the past 10 years according to research by the National Housing Federation.

In 2001 the average price of a home was £121,769, in the space of ten years the price has rocketed to £236,518 - an increase of 94%.

David Orr from the National Housing Federation says "we have a housing market that is not working".
