Sir Mervyn King criticises government mortgage scheme

The government's plans to get more people buying new homes has been criticised by the governor of the Bank of England.

Sir Mervyn King, who steps down at the end of next month, said the Help to Buy scheme was too close for comfort to the state guaranteeing mortgages, and had no place in the long run.
