Are 'tied pubs' harming industry?

Pubs which are tied to a particular brewery or pub company are struggling to make a profit, some publicans claim.

Around half of the UK's 50,000 pubs are run by the 'tied model', meaning landlords receive support and financial benefits from a pub company, such as lower rent, but are tied to buying beer from that supplier, rather than the open market.

The Campaign for Real Ale claims that 26 pubs close down every week in the UK. A government consultation on how they are run is under way.
