India mine row: New jobs versus traditional tribal life?

Villagers in a remote part of the eastern Indian state of Orissa have been voting on whether to allow mining firm Vedanta to extract bauxite from the Niyamgiri hills which are revered by local tribal people.

A long legal battle came to a conclusion in April when India's top court determined that local villagers must have their say.

This week a majority of the village council said they had rejected the mining company's plans.

Sanjoy Majumder reports from a protest in Delhi.
