Affordable housing 'out of reach' of most people

A housing charity has put together research suggesting that not only are homes just expensive, they are out of reach for almost everyone on an average income.

It come after figures from the Office for National Statistics showed last week that UK house prices are at record highs.

The charity Shelter claims that in half of all areas in England, less than 10% of homes are affordable for a typical working family looking to buy their first home.

Campbell Robb, Shelter's chief executive, told Today business presenter Simon Jack in some places such as Brighton or Cambridge no homes at all are affordable.

"We need to give everybody that chance to have a decent home," he said.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 23 October 2013.
