RBS system failure: Customers 'in serious condition'

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has promised to compensate those left "out of pocket" after customers of RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank were unable to pay for purchases on Monday evening.

Ian Field from High Wycombe described how he was unable to use his card to pay for his shopping or withdraw cash: "Anyone that was trying to buy petrol or food last night was in a serious condition."

He told BBC News it had made him think about who he banked with: "They really need to update their system... We're not getting that problem anywhere else."
