Costly helpline fees could be scrapped under new rules

The Fair Telecoms Campaign has welcomed plans to stop companies charging high rates for customer helpline calls.

The proposed law will mean customers can only be charged at a landline rate for calling 0845 and 0870 numbers.

Banks and insurers will be exempt from the plan.

David Hickson from Fair Telecoms Campaign told BBC Radio 5 live's Wake Up to Money the changes would "stop some of the abuses" and make the charges "better to understand".
