Willetts: 'Student fees package fair and progressive'

Universities minister David Willetts has defend the coalition's planned reforms for student fees, saying that the proposed package is "very fair and progressive".

It has emerged that thousands of university students from poorer backgrounds could have their tuition fees paid for up to two years under the new plans.

But ahead of Thursday's vote to raise fees to £9,000, student leaders said the idea would have "limited impact".
