Ofsted inspections 'to focus on underperforming schools'

Ofsted is proposing changes to its inspections system which would place more emphasis on schools that need stronger intervention, the organisation's chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw has said.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the 60% of schools in the UK marked "good" would receive a one-day inspection once every two years, with longer visits reserved for under-performing schools.

Brian Lightman, head of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), said he backed Sir Michael's proposals to create a greater degree of "professional dialogue" with school leaders.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 21 March.
