Home care 'better for dementia outcomes'

Caring for people with dementia provides better outcomes for patients according to Alzheimer's Society ambassador Kevin Whately.

A study from the society - based on feedback from carers, health workers and patients - has criticised the home support available and said the problem was causing unnecessary admissions to hospital and care homes.

Mr Whately, whose mother Mary died after suffering from the condition, said that helping family and friends care for patients is desirable, "but they do need support".

About 750,000 people in the UK have dementia, two-thirds of whom are living at home with support from loved ones and sometimes social services.
