Proposed reforms represent biggest shake up of NHS since it was formed

The Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, has been defending himself after being accused of undermining NHS hospitals and services by proposing to open them up to greater competition from private companies and charities.

The criticism comes from the body which represents family doctors who are key to the government's controversial health reforms in England.

If the health service reforms go through they would represent the biggest shake up of the organisation since it was formed sixty years ago.
