Leeds child heart surgery suspension: Tale of two families

The medical director of the NHS has defended the suspension of child heart surgery at Leeds General Infirmary while a safety review is carried out.

Sir Bruce Keogh said the trust had no choice, after data suggested a death rate twice the national average, and surgeons had raised their concerns.

There has been mixed reaction to the announcement: Jacqui Scott, mother of six-year-old heart patient Cameron, said she felt her son was getting the best possible care.

While Nicola Garbutt said she felt staff at the hospital had given up on her son George who had heart surgery at eight-weeks-old.
