Sepsis cases: 'Involve senior doctors sooner' - Health Service Ombudsman

Senior doctors should be involved earlier where there is a risk of sepsis, the Health Service Ombudsman is recommending.

Charles Turton, a clinical advisor with the Ombudsman, said patients in the early stages of sepsis can look "surprisingly well", leading some junior doctors to "wrongly" class them as a lower priority.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is to produce guidance for GPs and clinicians to help them recognise the condition at an early stage.

Around 37,00 people in the UK are estimated to die of the condition every year, which is caused when the body's immune system overreacts to infection.
