NHS maternity report: Health minister on UK safety

A health minister has defended the cost of insuring births in England.

Dr Daniel Poulter said that maternity negligence claims were not very common, but that "the cost of an individual claim can be very high".

A review by the National Audit Office said that in 2012 the NHS spent nearly £700 on clinical negligence cover for every live birth in England - almost a fifth of all spending on maternity.
