'Winter ward' to ease pressure on Blackburn hospital

Figures for accident and emergency performance in three different parts of the UK show that NHS targets for 95% of patients to be seen and treated within four hours are being missed.

The statistics confirm the very significant pressure on hospital emergency departments in recent weeks.

The Royal Blackburn Hospital has set up a "winter ward" to try to ease pressure on resources.

It treats patients who were admitted to A&E who then need extra care before they return home or move to rehabilitation.
