Pledge to end detention of mentally ill in prison

Authorities across all areas in England have pledged to bring an end to the practice of detaining people with mental health problems in police cells.

NHS services, councils and police forces will now come up with plans for how they will achieve it.

It is part of a wider commitment to improving mental health crisis care. Charities have welcomed the move, but warn funding shortages will be a problem.
