Cost of care: 'You have to make cold-hearted calculations'

Alex's Adamou's mother Andriani is 61 years old and has dementia. She has recently moved into a care home near Kew Gardens.

It is her 37-year-old son, Alex, and his sisters, who have had to make the difficult decisions about her care and how to pay for it.

"Do we secure my mother an income for the rest of her life which is probably not going to cover her care costs? Or do we spend the money now, when it's most useful to her, and then just hope for the best later on?"

"It's very uncertain. It's frightening for us and it would be frightening for my mother if she was aware of these sorts of issues".
