Simple steps 'could save the NHS £5bn'

The NHS in England could save £5bn a year with improved staff organisation and a better approach to purchasing everyday items, according to a report.

Lord Carter, who is a Labour peer, was asked by the Health Secretary to examine how hospitals could be more efficient.

After spending a year working with 22 hospitals he found wide variations in spending on items, from aprons to latex gloves.

Dominic Hughes reports.
