Mental health: Warning over lack of crisis care

Cuts to mental health services in England have started damaging the quality of care given to patients, a report suggests.

The review by the King's Fund think-tank found there was now "widespread evidence of poor quality care".

Researchers said NHS bosses had starting to rely on unproven, cheaper services in a bid to balance the books.

The report says beds and crisis support are being cut in favour of education and self-management schemes for patients.

"Kate" told the BBC's Sophie Hutchinson that when her father started self-harming and became suicidal, he was sent to a drop-in "Mental Health cafe" rather than specialist psychiatric help.
