In March 1971, Pakistani troops carried out a swoop against prominent Bengali nationalists and intellectuals in an attempt to curb the growing independence movement in what was then called East Pakistan.

It marked the beginning of the Bangladesh liberation war. Meghna Guhathakurta's father was one of those who was killed.
