Watch a mobile payment app in action at a univeristy

A university campus has become the first in the UK to allow people to pay for goods on campus without cash or cards.

Imperial College London is accepting Yoyo, a mobile payment and loyalty app, in cafes, bars and shops.

Addressing concerns about security, the company said using the app was "more secure" than traditional payments.

Banks, mobile networks and others have made several attempts to introduce smartphone based payments but they have had limited appeal.

Separately, PAYM, the new system for making payments using a mobile phone number, has launched in the UK.

Using their existing mobile banking app, people will be able to make a payment using someone's phone number, rather than their bank details.

More than 30 million people are eligible to use PAYM and around 400,000 people registered for the service in advance.
