Can wild konik ponies munch a meadow back to life?

A herd of wild ponies is helping to restore a flower-rich meadow in the north-east of Scotland.

The aim is to have the ponies graze away the tall rushes that are preventing smaller flowering plants from thriving. An RSPB team that brought the ponies to the site has now fitted them with GPS tracking collars in a bid to find out how to manage the herd as it grazes the meadow back to its former glory.

The scheme is part of a national project, led by the charity Plantlife, which aims to restore 25 square miles of meadow across the UK.
