Nobel Prize for physics the for invention of blue LEDs

The Nobel Prize for physics has been won by three Japanese scientists for their invention of blue light emitting diodes (LEDs)

Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura made the first blue LEDs in the early 1990s, which has helped in the development of smartphones and computer screens.

Speaking by phone after the prize was announced Prof Nakamura told the Assembly "it's unbelievable".
