Professor Peter Higgs wins Nobel prize for physics

Professor Peter Higgs of Edinburgh University has won the Nobel prize for physics.

The 84-year-old theoretician has been recognised for his explanation of how fundamental particles acquired mass at the birth of the universe.

Prof Higgs shares the prize with Belgian physicist Francois Englert.
