Thousands of people witnessed the Pope's beatification of 19th Century theologian Cardinal John Henry Newman at an open-air Mass at Cofton Park in Birmingham.

The event was the culmination of Pope Benedict XVI's first state to the UK.

The beatification ceremony was attended by more than 50,000 worshippers and brings the cardinal one step closer to becoming a saint.
