Defence review: David Cameron unveils armed forces cuts

Harrier jump jets, the Navy's flagship HMS Ark Royal and planned Nimrod spy planes are to be axed and 42,000 forces jobs cut by 2015, the Prime Minister has said.

Unveiling the strategic defence review, David Cameron said defence spending would fall by 8% over four years.

The RAF and Navy will lose 5,000 jobs each, the Army 7,000 and the Ministry of Defence 25,000 civilian staff.

A Harrier pilot made his views plain when given the chance to quiz David Cameron during a visit to the Northwood airbase.

Lt Cdr Kris Ward told the prime minister he was an Afghanistan veteran facing the prospect of unemployment.
