Somalis' battle to raise ransom to free Chandlers

A community leader in London has described how Somali people in the UK pledged £300,000 of ransom money to try and free British couple Paul and Rachel Chandler from captivity by pirates.

Halim Ali Awaleh described how the demands of the Somali hostage-takers rocketed to around £1m and became out of their reach.

The sum paid for the Chandlers' eventual release is reportedly "the best part of $1m" (£620,000), although there has been no official confirmation of this.
