Nato official says children "safer" in Afghanistan

NATO's most senior civilian representative in Afghanistan has suggested that the country's war torn capital is safer for children than London, Glasgow or New York.

In an interview for Newsround on CBBC, to be broadcast later today, Mark Sedwill said despite the threat of unexploded bombs, Kabul is less dangerous than many western cities.

Mr Sedwill has since sought to clarify his comments saying: "I was trying to explain to an audience of British children how uneven violence is across Afghanistan.

"Half the insurgent violence takes place in 10 of the 365 districts and, in those places, children are too often the victims of IEDs and other dangers."

"But, in cities like Kabul where security has improved, the total levels of violence, including criminal violence, are comparable to those which many western children would experience."
