Careless drivers face on-the-spot fixed penalties

Motorists who are caught tailgating could find themselves facing on-the-spot fines and points on their licence under new measures being announced by the government.

Until now police could only issue a warning for most careless driving offences.

The changes will also mean larger fines being issued for offences such as failing to wear a seatbelt.
