Motorists' group welcomes fixed fines for careless drivers

Motorists who are caught tailgating could find themselves facing on-the-spot fines and points on their licence under new measures being announced by the government.

Until now police could only issue a warning for most careless driving offences.

The changes would also mean bigger fines being issued for offences such as failing to wear a seatbelt.

Tim Shallcross from the Institute of Advanced Motorists welcomed the move, but warned the practicalities of policing could be an issue.
