Neville Lawrence: 'We need public inquiry led by a judge'

Stephen Lawrence's father Neville has called for a public inquiry into claims that police tried to smear the Lawrence family.

It comes after undercover officer Peter Francis said he was instructed in 1993 to find information that could discredit the Lawrence family.

Matthew Ryder QC, who has represented the Lawrence family, said the claims were so serious that they could not be dealt with through an internal police review - there had to be public disclosure.

Mr Lawrence told the BBC, "My family has never done anything to warrant an officer being stationed in our house... [except] somebody killed our first-born child".
