Parking revenue 'down in real terms'

The amount of money generated for councils by parking charges and fines is declining in real terms, according to a senior figure in the Local Government Association.

Councillor David Sparks told the BBC that local authorities were reviewing their charges "to see whether they can reduce them, or increase the amount of parking available for town centres."

His comments come in response to research from the RAC Foundation suggesting local authorities made a surplus of £565m in the year to April 2012, up £54m on the previous year.
