Red Cross collects food from shoppers to help needy

For the first time since World War Two, the Red Cross is to collect food nationwide to go to families struggling to feed themselves.

It has joined forces with two other charities, asking people to donate food as they do their supermarket shop.

Recent figures suggested that nearly half a million people in Britain needed support from food banks last year.
