Afghan man on childhood Channel Tunnel escape

An Afghan man has described how he smuggled himself into Britain through the Channel Tunnel as a teenager.

"Ali" left Afghanistan aged 14 after Taliban fighters invaded his village and killed many members of his family.

In 2000, two years later, he jumped onto a vehicle-transporter at Calais and hid behind the wheels of a lorry onboard.

Speaking with journalist Michael Goldfarb for 5 live's From Kabul to Kent documentary, Ali said: "If the police had caught me, I wouldn't be here right now."

From Kabul to Kent is broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live on Sunday 9 February at 21:00 GMT
