Nigel Evans prosecution was 'right decision' says DPP Alison Saunders

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Alison Saunders, has defended the decision to put the former Commons deputy speaker, Nigel Evans, on trial.

A former director of the Crown Prosecution Service, Lord Macdonald, has urged prosecutors to "keep a cool head" in investigations of historic abuse.

Mr Evans was cleared on Thursday of a series of sexual offences, including one of rape.

DPP Alison Saunders said it was important not to ''shy away'' from difficult cases.
