Farmer: Fly-tipping happens 'three times a week'

The National Farmer's Union (NFU) has urged people who dump rubbish on farmland to take more responsibility or face prosecution.

The NFU said there was a case of fly-tipping every 44 seconds in England during 2012-13, leaving farmers with a clean-up bill of around £47m.

St Albans farmer Bill Barr said he had to deal with fly-tipping on his land three times a week - with people leaving everything from tyres to material containing asbestos.

He told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "Most people are pleased to see their rubbish gone and they're not worried about where it goes. We all know in the countryside just where it is going - every day."
