'Shocking' rise in use of food banks

A food bank charity says it has handed out more than 900,000 food parcels in the last year.

The Trussell Trust, which runs 400 food banks, says it handed out 913,000 emergency parcels in the last financial year, more than double the total in the previous year.

Forty bishops are among hundreds of members of the clergy who have called on party leaders to do more to prevent people going hungry, in the light of what they describe as a ''shocking'' increase in the use of food banks.

Robert Pigott reports.
