Reporter James Foley murder: 'He shone a light in dark places'

The apparent murder of a US reporter by jihadist militants, is "a loss to journalism and to the world", a friend has said.

James Foley went missing in Syria in 2012. A video released online by the Islamic State (IS) purports to show his killing, in revenge for US air strikes against IS fighters in Iraq.

Sunday Times photographer Paul Conroy, who worked alongside him in 2011, said Foley had shone "a light into...dark places where dictators thrive".
