British IS hostage Alan Henning 'inspired by friends' in Syria aid work

A second British man being held hostage by Islamic State (IS) militants was inspired by friends to take part in aid missions to Syria, the BBC has learned.

Alan Henning, 47, a volunteer on an aid convoy, was threatened in an IS video released on Saturday, showing the murder of British aid worker David Haines.

The BBC's Catrin Nye, who met Mr Henning ahead of one of his aid trips, described him as a "kind" and "funny" man, who had had no formal training for the role.
