Fiona Woolf resigns as head of child abuse inquiry

Fiona Woolf has announced that she is resigning as head of an inquiry into historic child sex abuse.

Victims' groups had told Home Office officials the inquiry would be a "dead duck" if she remained chairwoman after revelations about her social links to ex-Home Secretary Lord Brittan.

Mrs Woolf said she had realised that if she did not command the victims' confidence "then I need to get out of the way".
