Young transgender referrals more than treble in three years

The number of young people being referred to support services for help because they feel they have been born the wrong gender has more than trebled in the last three years, according to research by the BBC.

A major centre helping under-18s with transgender issues says 441 young people came to them for assessment from across the UK in the last year.

BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat found that compared to 91 in 2010. It is thought better awareness of gender issues may be causing the increase.
