Nigel Evans: 'This is a good compromise'

There should be a statutory ban on the identification of people who are arrested for sexual offences in England and Wales, a committee of MPs has said.

The Home Affairs Select Committee said sexual offence suspects deserved the right to anonymity, unless they were charged or police needed to name them.

Last year, the Conservative MP Nigel Evans stood trial on a string of sex offence allegations, including rape. He was cleared on all nine counts and subsequently described the 11-month judicial process as like being hit by a truck every day.

He told the BBC the new proposal was "a good compromise".
