St Albans sinkhole: Brickworks link being investigated

The British Geological Survey has said a large sinkhole which opened in St Albans, Herts, on Thursday may be linked to an old brickworks which used to be on the site.

Helen Reeves explained that this meant there was a layer of soft clay, which was extracted in the brick-making.

This clay, and a layer of chalk which is dissolved by water, contributed to the hole opening up.
