Sevenoaks pupils 'travel an hour each way'

Sarah Shilling, of the Sevenoaks Grammar School Campaign, has welcomed the government's decision to allow England its first "new" grammar school in five decades.

Weald of Kent school in Tonbridge will open a site in Sevenoaks, Kent - side-stepping a ban on new grammar schools.

Mrs Shilling said that this would benefit local, academically-gifted girls, who currently have to travel around an hour each way to go to school:

"There aren't many towns in the country like Sevenoaks which are in a selective system without a selective school."

Mrs Shilling said she would continue to campaign for local boys to have the option to go to a local grammar school too.
