Storm Desmond: Severe disruption as winds and rain batter UK

Heavy rainfall and strong winds from Storm Desmond continue to batter the UK.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes as flash flooding swept through parts of northern England and southern Scotland.

Roads have been closed, rail services disrupted and some areas have been left without any power.

The Environment Agency has 42 severe flood warnings in place indicating a danger to life and the Met Office is advising people not to travel unless it is essential.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has two severe flood warnings in force.
