Britain's last deep coal mine has closed

Miners at the UK's last remaining deep-coal mine have worked their final shifts.

The closure of their pit - Kellingley Colliery - marked an end to centuries of deep-coal mining in Britain - an industry that once employed over 1,000,000 people.

The miners were brought up for a last time from the coal face, 800 feet below.
