Using mobiles while driving to incur tougher penalties

Drivers who use a hand-held mobile phone while driving could face tougher penalties, if government safety plans are approved.

Ministers are planning to increase fixed penalty fines from £100 to £150, and to raise the number of penalty points drivers receive.

Motoring groups have welcomed the plans, which will be consulted on in 2016.
