Call to relax Sunday trading laws

Rules on Sunday opening hours for shops in England and Wales are out of date and should be relaxed, according to a group of 200 MPs and council leaders.

In a letter to the Sunday Telegraph, they wrote that longer opening hours on Sundays would help shops compete with online firms, though unions and some retailers say the restrictions protect workers.

There are currently no trading restrictions in Scotland, while in Northern Ireland shops can only open for up to five hours.
